New York City -- The current (December
28 - January 5) issue of 'People Magazine announces the editors' choices
of "The 25 Most Intriguing People '97." Included with the
likes of Bill Clinton, Elton John, Madeleine Albright, Bill Cosby and
Jewel is magician David Blaine.
Describing Blaine's first television
special as "stunning," the magazine and credits him with a
"Svengali-like presence" as a performer. The magazine's
over-all rave for Blaine includes a quote attributed to James Randi that
"any" competent magician can do the tricks that Blaine does,
which the magazine shrugs off by pointing out Blain's overwhelming
success.
Reported for Blaine are another
telvision special and plans for a movie, "Trick Monkey," which
the magazine says will be produced by Robert De Niro.
In an informal polling of magicians by Magic
Show, the general consensus was surprise at People magazine choosing
a magician for such a high profile media star feature and credit to
Blaine for having broken out of the contemporary magic mold to create a
place for himself in suck company.
