Blaine finally auctioned off
the rights to his new book, "Mysterious Stranger" to Villard
Books, an imprint of Random House, Inc. It is to be published in the
fall of 2001. Blaine's book will
bring his unique blend of magic and downtown sensibility into the
reader's world, supporting Blaine's belief that "you don't get into
magic, magic gets into you."
"Villard Books has a long history
of being there first," said Ann Godoff, President, Publisher and
Editor in Chief of the Random House Trade Group. "David Blaine is
the magician of the new millennium and I couldn't be more pleased that
he found a home at Villard." The deal was brokered by David
Vigliano of Vigliano Associates.
In his book, Blaine will explore the
history of magic and some of the greatest stunts ever accomplished, as
well as his own influences. It will also contain optical illusions,
magic effects, number magic, memory techniques, how to read someone,
explanations of witchcraft, voodoo and the occult, and other aspects of
the magical world. The book will
have clues imbedded in the text which will lead one lucky reader to a
buried treasure chest, filled with at least $100,000 in rare gold coins.
He's developed the code in conjunction with Dave Phillips, one of the
nation's top cryptographers. The book will be part pop history - it'll
explain how some legendary magicians in the days of yore even stopped
wars - and part tell-all, revealing how magic tricks and illusions work.
"I want the book to have things that can get people hooked on magic
- mathematical puzzles and simple effects that you can flip people out
with anytime," says Blaine.
